Counselling
I just can't concentrate on my studies. Whenever I sit down to study or do anything important and worthwhile I just can't focus and keep thinking of all the irrelevant and unimportant things in life. Please help.

Lets get down at the root of the problem and see why can’t one concentrate. We lose concentration when our mind is unable to focus. Have you ever noticed that your concentration is really high when you are watching a movie, playing some sports, talking to friend or doing anything that you enjoy and are interested in. But this is not the case when you study or do related things. Why? So the problem is not that your concentration is poor, it is rather that your concentration is poor in some selected activities which you don’t enjoy.

Mind is a great powerhouse. It is said that whatever our mind can conceive it can achieve.  Mind is a thought factory, it creates thoughts and regulates the brain and the body through the thoughts that it generates. However it has one big problem; it is very restless. Mind just can’t relax. It keeps jumping from one thought to another; thereby not allowing one to focus on any particular thought. Thus when you do certain activities which you don’t really enjoy then you start thinking of things which you like. For eg. you start thinking of cricket a soon as you start solving maths problems.

So if you want to improve your concentration then you need to train your mind to focus on one thought at a time. As  soon as your mind starts wandering simply try to get it back on the topic on which you are concentrating. It will be difficult towards the beginning but can be achieved through regular practice. Meditation, pranayam, yoga really help in developing high focus and concentration.

I 'have always been a very sincere student. Unfortunately due to some family problems I couldn't study and failed in my exams. I am feeling totally hopeless & dejected. Life seems to be a curse. I feel suicidal. Please help me out.
Failures and success are two sides of the same coin. There is no success without failure. I should say that you don’t fail when u are not able to achieve what you want but you fail rather when you are not able to rise after you fall. The bounce back capability is success
Failures test your mettle.

I just can’t understand how can you ever think of giving up your life. This failure is temporary. You just lose on one year while when you give up your life then its over for ever. In fact you should take up this opportunity to prove yourself and show that your zeal and ambition is unstoppable and nothing can stop you from achieving what you want. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Failures do make you hopeless and are painful when they happen; but years later ‘A COLLECTION of MISTAKES form an EXPERIENCE’. So, Never blame a day in your life; Good Days Give you Happiness, Bad Days Give you Experience. Both are GOD’s Blessings.

I am very confused with life. What do you mean by success? Does spiritual growth gives happiness or material growth? The more I look around the more confused I get about the meaning of life and what to expect out of it. How to get satisfaction out o

Life is beautiful. But to enjoy its beauty you need to set the right chords. A sweet melodious music is one in which there is presence of all the ‘Surs’.  A balanced life is an ideal life. You need to incorporate all the aspects of life be it spiritual, material, social, personal, career, hobbies, health etc. According to me if we get lopsided focusing only on a single dimension of life then we are not able to derive maximum satisfaction.

A truly satisfying, happy & successful life is one which has encompassed in itself all the dimensions. Problem with most of us is that we keep running after something, trying to achieve things which we don’t have at he expense of what we have. Rather we should enjoy all aspects and make life all the more enriching & beautiful.
