Lets get down at the root of the problem and see why can’t one concentrate. We lose concentration when our mind is unable to focus. Have you ever noticed that your concentration is really high when you are watching a movie, playing some sports, talking to friend or doing anything that you enjoy and are interested in. But this is not the case when you study or do related things. Why? So the problem is not that your concentration is poor, it is rather that your concentration is poor in some selected activities which you don’t enjoy.
Mind is a great powerhouse. It is said that whatever our mind can conceive it can achieve. Mind is a thought factory, it creates thoughts and regulates the brain and the body through the thoughts that it generates. However it has one big problem; it is very restless. Mind just can’t relax. It keeps jumping from one thought to another; thereby not allowing one to focus on any particular thought. Thus when you do certain activities which you don’t really enjoy then you start thinking of things which you like. For eg. you start thinking of cricket a soon as you start solving maths problems.
So if you want to improve your concentration then you need to train your mind to focus on one thought at a time. As soon as your mind starts wandering simply try to get it back on the topic on which you are concentrating. It will be difficult towards the beginning but can be achieved through regular practice. Meditation, pranayam, yoga really help in developing high focus and concentration.
Life is beautiful. But to enjoy its beauty you need to set the right chords. A sweet melodious music is one in which there is presence of all the ‘Surs’. A balanced life is an ideal life. You need to incorporate all the aspects of life be it spiritual, material, social, personal, career, hobbies, health etc. According to me if we get lopsided focusing only on a single dimension of life then we are not able to derive maximum satisfaction.
A truly satisfying, happy & successful life is one which has encompassed in itself all the dimensions. Problem with most of us is that we keep running after something, trying to achieve things which we don’t have at he expense of what we have. Rather we should enjoy all aspects and make life all the more enriching & beautiful.
